The South African Social Security Agency administers the Social Relief of Distress Grant and other social grants in South Africa. The SRD grant was established to assist mostly unemployed South Africans and those affected by the devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background

The pandemic has as a result of hard lockdown resulted in some “hardships” for most of the South Africans. Some of the people have lost jobs due to retrenchments caused by the lockdown. Even before the pandemic, South Africa has reported high unemployment rate at 35.3% on the last quarter of 2021.

SRD Grant Establishment

Against such background, the government has established the SRD Grant to assist those affected by the pandemic. Over 10 million applications to date have been approved for the R350 grant. But also there is also a high number of people who were declined the grant due to different reasons.

Why applicants are declined?

Some on the reasons for the decline or rejection include the following:

The applicant were found on the NSFAS database

The applicant was receiving other social grant from Sassa

The age group of the applicant does not fall within the required age groups.

The applicant declined because of the “ UIF registered Sassa Declined” reason.

So, what steps does one have to take if they were declined do to UIF registered reason?

UIF says that, people do not have to go to UIF offices to be removed on the UIF database; rather they must appeal the decision directly with Sassa.

How to appeal for SRD Grant declined?

If you still believe that you are eligible for the SRD grant, you have to lodge an appeal with Sassa. You can do this every month of each rejection.

Here are the steps to follow in order to appeal if your grant has been declined because of any reason.

Step 1: Go to the SRD Grant website

Step 2: Scroll down to ‘Application for reconsideration’

Step 3: Click on the yellow bar

Step 4: Fill in the required information on the fields provided.

  • Identity Number or Department of Home Affairs Refugee permit number
  • Name and Surname as captured in the Identity Document
  • Gender and Disability
